Natural Hair: The Do’s And The Don’ts
As someone who was clueless when I first started out in my natural hair journey- gave up by relaxing my hair, cutting my hair, and starting again- I kind of know one or two things about how to care for my natural hair.
Starting out I made a lot of mistakes and it seemed like my hair wasn’t growing, it looked dull and unhealthy, the second time I decided to try again, I was more intentional and did a lot of research on how to care for natural hair.
Since I decided to give this natural hair thing another chance, I’ve seen a lot of improvement and growth and I would love to share some dos and don’ts with you to prevent you from making the same mistakes I made when I first started out and to form new habits that will take your natural hair care to the next level.

The Do’s
- Do have a regimen you follow: Know what your hair needs and create a routine that is suitable for your hair needs. It could be something as simple as moisturizing your hair every two days or having a fixed set of steps you follow on your wash day.
- Take care of your scalp: Your scalp is where the strands of your hair grow from so it deserves to be taken care of as much as your hair itself. Moisturize it regularly to create a good environment for hair growth.
- Always keep your hair moisturized: Due to the curly or coily nature of your hair, your type 4 hair will need more moisture than any other hair type, so make sure to moisturize. Lack of moisture will lead to dryness which will cause breakage.
- Use products that are suitable for your hair porosity: Find out what your hair porosity is and get products that are suited to your porosity. Hair porosity is basically the ability of your hair to absorb and retain moisture. The two major types of hair porosity are low and high porosity.
- Trim your end when needed: Once you start noticing split ends, it means you need to get your hair trimmed so your split ends don’t work their way up to your hair and cause breakage.
- Protect your hair at night: Silk bonnets, silk scarves, or silk pillowcases are crucial for your natural hair and cannot be overemphasized. Moisturizing without protecting your hair at night without protecting it will lead to loss of moisture.
- Deep condition on your wash days: If you can, deep condition every wash day. Your hair will get really dry after shampooing and deep conditioning is a way of restoring moisture back to the hair, it is also a good addition to your detangling process.

The Don’ts
- Don’t always use heat on your hair: Too much heat damages the hair. Reduce the number of times you use heat on your natural hair and even if you have to use heat, always use a heat protectant.
- Don’t always put your hair in a tight bun: Avoid manipulating your hair by putting it in tight hairstyles, this will bring about tension on your edges and cause it to break. It can also lead to an overly sensitive scalp.
- Don’t be impatient: You’ll see the progress, everything is a process and sometimes it takes a lot of time. Be patient and you’ll see growth.
- Don’t leave your hair in a protective style for too long: Protective styles are amazing and if you moisturize your hair properly while in a protective style, you are going to notice a significant amount of growth. While this is really good for your natural hair, leaving your hair in a protective style(with extensions) for too long will cause a lot of buildups and unnecessary pressure on your hair and scalp.
- Don’t detangle your hair when dry: This can seriously damage your hair, detangling should only take place when your hair is moisturized.
- Don’t use harmful styling tools: Be cautious of the tools used when detangling or styling your hair. You should opt for tools such as a wide-tooth comb or an actual detangling brush, also replace your normal pair of scissors with hair shears when trimming your ends. -Don’t compare: Lastly don’t compare your progress or the texture of your hair with anyone else’. Your hair is beautiful the way it is, embrace it and learn to care for it.
